Smoke detectors for inaccessible spaces

Smoke detection for inaccessible places High ceilings
The high ceilings of churches, cathedrals, temples, hotel & office building atriums, theatres and public buildings make it difficult to install and maintain smoke detectors. Access equipment such as scaffolding or scissor lifts must be used, making it expensive and dangerous. A VESDA smoke detection system can be installed with the detectors at ground level, making maintenance easy.

Sub-floor and roof spaces
Crawling around beneath floors or in roof spaces is not fun. Installing smoke detection in those spaces can create a maintenance problem if the detectors are physically under the floor or in the roof space. A VESDA smoke detection system can be configured with only the air sampling pipes in the area being protected. The detector can be positioned somewhere more accessible. Maintenance and testing are then easily performed without having to enter the roof or sub-floor space.

Sealed rooms
Rooms that are sealed to exclude the external environment or to maintain an internal environment present a smoke detection challenge. By installing a VESDA pipe network in the room and connecting this to a detector outside the room, the room does not need to be entered to maintain the smoke detection system. The pipe network is simply PVC pipe with holes drilled where sampling points are required. All maintenance and routine testing can be done at the detector.

Underground confined spaces
High voltage cables and electrical equipment in cable tunnels and other underground spaces can be a fire risk. To install and maintain smoke detectors in these spaces requires testing the area for CO2 prior to entry and compliance with occupational health and safety rules. A VESDA smoke detection system can be configured with only the air sampling pipes in the underground area. The detector can be positioned above ground. Maintenance and testing are then easily performed.

Prison cells
Smoke detectors in prison cells are frequently tampered with. Maintaining or testing them means entering the cell and the inherent dangers of doing so. Sampling points for a VESDA air sampling smoke detection system can be concealed in the cell where they are not detectable by inmates. Installation, maintenance and testing can be performed in one centralized service area avoiding the need to access cells.

Public areas
Scheduling maintenance in buildings that are open to the public 24/7, such as: can be a nightmare. Maintaining ceiling-mounted smoke detectors in these areas requires ladders, scaffolding or scissor lifts that can threaten public safety. A VESDA smoke detector system can have the detectors at floor level, with the maintenance-free pipe network installed on the ceiling. Regular maintenance and system testing is then easily performed without the need for access equipment.
